Question: Hello, I have two questions. First, I have microcysts on my eye and I was wondering if that would cause me not to be a good candidate for Lasik. Second, is this procedure safe for someone with large pupils?
Answer: It is difficult to speculate whether "microcysts on your eye" are a contraindication to LASIK unless we know the location and the cause of the microcysts. If they are on the cornea, and if you are a contact lens wearer, it would be important to determine whether the microcysts are contact lens induced as a result of either inadequate oxygen supply through the lenses or perhaps even a toxic reaction to the lens care system. In any event, they should not be there. The good news is that in either case they will likely go away if you remove the lens for a period of time. If the microcysts are the result of a corneal dystrophy, it is likely that you are not a LASIK candidate. Large pupils may be a relative contraindication to LASIK. It depends how large. However, today with the use of scanning/tracking lasers, the LASIK surgeon is able to provide fairly large optic zone treatment sizes and thus pupil size alone is rarely a contraindication.
